Sr. Forensics Engineer (PE) - Remote

Position Overview We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with a background in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering to conduct forensic investigations involving equipment failures, property damage, construction defects, and industrial systems. This role combines engineering analysis, field investigations, root cause determination, and expert report writing. The successful candidate will perform on-site inspections, evaluate engineering systems, analyze failures, and provide technical conclusions for clients in legal, insurance, industrial, and commercial environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct forensic investigations involving mechanical systems, electrical systems, equipment failures, fires, explosions, construction defects, and property losses.
  • Perform site inspections to document conditions, collect evidence, take measurements, and evaluate system performance.
  • Analyze engineering data, maintenance records, testing results, drawings, specifications, and witness statements.
  • Determine root causes of failures and identify contributing factors.
  • Prepare clear, defensible technical reports detailing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Develop repair, remediation, or replacement recommendations when applicable.
  • Coordinate with attorneys, insurance carriers, property owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide expert opinions and technical consultation related to engineering failures and losses.
  • Participate in depositions, mediations, arbitrations, or court proceedings as an expert witness when required.
  • Stay current with applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in design, operations, maintenance, investigations, consulting, or forensic engineering.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, electrical systems, industrial equipment, building systems, or infrastructure.
  • Experience performing field inspections and technical investigations.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues and develop evidence-based conclusions.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to investigation sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of engineering experience.
  • Previous forensic engineering, failure analysis, expert witness, insurance, consulting, or litigation support experience.
  • Multiple state PE registrations or ability to obtain additional licenses.
  • Experience with industrial facilities, power systems, manufacturing equipment, commercial buildings, or construction projects.
  • NCEES Record preferred.

Travel Requirements

  • Approximately 20%–40% travel depending on project workload.
  • Travel includes site inspections, client meetings, testing activities, and occasional legal proceedings.
  • Most travel consists of day trips with occasional overnight travel.
