YourPace Part-Time Faculty: Professional Communication

The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) invites applications for a part-time, remote Adjunct Faculty position in Professional Communication within the English and Media Studies BA program, offered through the YourPace competency-based education (CBE) model. This fully online, asynchronous, 8-week course emphasizes practical communication skills essential for academic, professional, and civic success and fulfills the University’s General Education Oral Communication requirement. Adjunct faculty may serve as Instructors of Record and/or contribute to course development. Teaching assignments occur six times per year with multiple start dates. Faculty report to the Chair of Arts & Humanities and work closely with the Media and Cultural Studies Program Lead and the Coordinator of General Education. UMPI is a public institution accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). YourPace is a flexible, subscription-based CBE program designed for adult learners. All courses are fully online and asynchronous. Adjunct faculty are compensated according to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements/MOUs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in a fully online, asynchronous environment
  • Facilitate student mastery of communication competencies, including presentations, interpersonal, and workplace communication
  • Provide timely, substantive feedback on assessments and projects (within 72 hours)
  • Coach students in effective oral and professional communication for diverse audiences
  • Support student progress in the CBE framework and maintain regular communication via email, Zoom, or phone
  • Utilize learning management systems and instructional technology effectively

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in English, Communication, Speech Communication, Communication Studies, or a closely related field; OR a master’s in another discipline with at least 18 graduate credits in communication or speech
  • Experience teaching oral and/or professional communication at the college level
  • Experience coaching students in presentations
  • Proficiency with learning management systems and instructional technology
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse students
  • Commitment to competency-based education and self-paced, mastery-focused learning

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in English, Rhetoric, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, or related field
  • College-level teaching experience in communication, public speaking, or general education courses
  • Experience in CBE, online, hybrid, or nontraditional formats
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness (evaluations, peer observations, portfolio)
  • Professional experience in presentations, training, or public speaking
  • Commitment to inclusive learning environments
  • Experience teaching Media, Cultural, or Environmental Studies topics

Technology Requirements: YourPace Adjunct Faculty are required to have the appropriate technology to teach in a fully online environment. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Computer (laptop) with appropriate amounts of processing speed
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Webcam
  • Microphone
